The problem hiding in your cup
A 2019 McGill University study, widely reported by the BBC, found that a single plastic teabag released about 11.6 billion microplastic particles and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles into hot water at brewing temperature. The bags tested were nylon and PET, the plastic used in water bottles.
In 2024, researchers at the Autonomous University of Barcelona found that polymer teabags release millions of micro and nanoplastic particles when brewed. Most tea in the UK is made with teabags. As the BBC noted, most are paper with a little plastic to seal them, while some premium pyramid bags are made of plastic mesh.
We started Brewstik because a good cup of tea should not come wrapped in plastic.
What we built
The Brewstik Tea Infuser is a precision-engineered brewing tool made from food grade stainless steel with ultra-fine micro-mesh filtration. No plastic. No silicone seals. Nothing plastic to shed. Just clean, full-flavoured tea the way it should be.
It works with every type of loose leaf tea (black, green, herbal, oolong) and it is easy to look after: rinse it under warm water and wash it gently by hand. One Brewstik replaces thousands of disposable teabags over its lifetime.
